Versions
There are three (3) different connection type versions of the Swimmer Style Headset.
Kenwood (2 pin)
Motorola (1 pin)
Icom (2 pin)
The Motorola (1 pin) version fit the Cobra radio that we were using for testing purposes.
First Impression
The first thing that I noticed out of the box was the nice and large ‘Push to Talk’ module. You are not going to have any problem finding your Comms button even with gloves on if you use this device. The first negative thing we noticed was the lack of adjustability. Now it is adjustable to an extent, but not fully. It is mostly elastic so fitting on most people’s heads will most likely not be a problem.
Communication Quality
Because of the nature of the Swimmer Style Headset it basically seals your left ear off from outside noise. So you will probably not need your radio set at quite the volume level you normally use it at. If someone hits the call button on their radio you are certainly going to know about it. The ‘clicks’ coming before and after others transmissions can also be very loud in your ear. The comms quality, however, is excellent. Going both ways it is clear as can be. Others will hear you just as clear as you can hear them. As an added bonus there is no vox setting on this headset so you won’t get caught hot-micing the radio.
In the Field
I really did not like the elastic bands touching my head. I found it to be much more comfortable to wear this headset on the outside of a ball cap. Another area of concern is with your eye protection. There were a few setups that did not mate well with the Swimmer Style Headset. When you get a hat, headset and eye pro all trying to occupy the same space it can become a little crowded.
Final Thoughts
When it comes down to it, this review is not going to be that helpful. The Swimmer Style Headset is going to be a product that either does or does not work for you. I personally am going to find another solution but others on my team love this headset and would not give it up.
