JG FULL METAL MP5 RAS
Written by
This exciting new All Metal MP5 from Jing Gong (JG) looks very promising. Read further for our review!

What’s Included
First thing is first. The list of what is in the box. Full Metal MP5, Fore grip (battery box), 200 round highcap mag, Charger, 8.4volt Ni-MH battery, barrel cleaning rod, manual (in English), 2 allen wrenches (will not disassemble the entire weapon), aim point receiving apparatus (attached to weapon in the box), orange safety barrel cap, small package of bb’s from unknown origin.
Be careful with some of the online airsoft retailers out there. This weapon (stock at least) DOES NOT come with the quick detach silencer or the red dot sight. This particular JG MP5 came from PointAct.com.
Construction
When they said FULL METAL they were not kidding. I have not yet found a plastic piece on this weapon (update: except the charging handle cover). Except of course for the gearbox selector plate. I really feel as though I can drop this weapon if needed and no damage will be suffered (ActualAirsoft.com does not encourage you to drop your weapons). This particular MP5 weighs just about 6.6 lbs, the real MP5 Navy A3 itself weights 6.7 lbs so that would make this replica just about as real-weight as you can get. The collapsible stock seems a little stiff at times but I am sure it will wear in with a little time. It is equipped with standard MP5 iron sights but also (stated above) comes with the aim point receiving apparatus (a scope right) already attached to the side rails. The 8.4 volt batt is housed in the fore grip, never really been a fan of fore grips so I will probably be getting a small battery box.
The magazine is just like any other TM compatible MP5 mag. Except this one didn’t work out of the box. It would not wind the bb’s up the channel. After taking the magazine apart I found there was a little foreign piece of metal in the ammo channel preventing any rounds from moving upwards. Once I removed that the mag worked properly.
The selector switch seems very “clicky”. You pretty much always know exactly what fire-mode you are in with this weapon (big plus!).
The weapon also appears to be ready for a TM compatible quick detach silencer.
First Shots
So the box claimed 330 feet per second at the muzzle. Although on many airsoft retailing websites it is claimed to run 360-400 (Evike), 400-420 (Import Action), 385 (AirsofGI). So you can imagine our anticipation at getting to the bottom of this. Usually if the box and the retailers disagree the actual speed it closer to what the box says. The result was nothing short of extreme surprise. The first .20 gram bb shot from our JG MP5 came in at 415 fps! 10 more rounds revealed it was consistent with the fastest round at 421 fps and the slowest at 405 fps. So yes this is considered a “hot weapon” at most fields. Especially CQB (CQC) facilities.
Internals, Hop-up and Barrel
Like I said before it is a standard version 2 gearbox inside with a regular hopup and a non-tightbore barrel. When I tested this SMG it was about 20 degrees (F) outside so the hopup might have suffered a bit. It did perform well (not great) though. Out of 10 shots there were probably 10 hopup misfits (you know when they don’t follow the other rounds). However cold is hard on any hopup system so I bet this is no problem in warmer weather.
Disassembly
Disassembles just like any other MP5. Really nothing new here to report.
Spare Parts and Upgradability
It uses all the same parts as any other MP5, so yes there are lots of options.
Final Thoughts
Pros:
Its ALL METAL, not part metal or mostly metal, ALL METAL (update: except for the charging handle cover…oh well). Velocity is very fast. Reasonable price.
Cons:
Shoots quite a bit faster than advertised, this could be a problem depending on your field limits.
Conclusion:
Need an MP5 that shoots over 400 fps and could probably substitute for a baseball bat if you needed one (we do not recommend this), and is reasonably priced? Then this is probably your weapon
After Battle Follow-up
It was COLD! Rate of Fire suffered because of this. I would probably run this MP5 off of a 9.6volt if it were up to me. Works pretty good as a snipers backup weapon.

I have to agree with your review good bang for the buck, my only con is that the stock on mine collapses very very easily, basically making it useless when extended. Does anyone else have that problem or did I just get a bad stock?
June 11th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
George, the weapon that we reviewed did not have any problems with the stock being to loose. If anything ours was a little two tight until it had been used for a while.
June 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
bkeltner, thanks for the response, I took the stock off and found the screw on the release/lock mechanism was not tight causing it to not fully lock into place. Tightened this up and it works great now! Love your reviews on here keep up the good work.
I was thinking of using a M4 length tight bore barrel with a suppressor for increased accuracy. Any one try this or have a good upgrade list for increased reliability?

is this gun legal to buy and how much is it (the one in the first picture)
and is it possible to get it 2 toned if it is illegal. thankyou
August 4th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Luke: These are airsoft weapons. Not real weapons. Yes they are legal in the United States. If you are from another country you will need to check with your local laws. In the US you can buy these replica weapons as long as you are 18 years of age. Do be careful, Law Enforcement Officers will treat them is Actual Weapons if they are brandished in public. Airsoft weaponry should never be visible to the public. Only uncase them in a controlled environment (private property, out of view of the public). Please read the disclaimer and warning at the bottom of this page too.

i have this gun and i absolutely love it… i just overcharged the battery and now i need a new one.. does anyone know witch battery i can get to fit it i want a 9.6volt and i need it mini because i have the retractable stock. i also want to know what spring i can upgrade it to either a m120 or an m160 and how do i take apart the gun… thanks
August 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Joey,
An m120 (which is what this weapon comes with) is already shooting hotter than most fields will allow. If you want to be legal at all field I would suggest downgrading to an m110. No this weapon will not house an m160. You really need special equipment including a new motor to run an m160 setup.

I have thi gun and it works good.
Wondering what kind of suppresor and scope was used in the picture on the left at the top.

[…] the famous “Black Gearbox” made so popular by the JG M4 S-System series rifles and the JG Full Metal RAS/RIS MP5 [review]. These are standard version 2 gearboxes that should accept any TM standard replacement or upgrade […]

this thing is great, except for the foregrip (i hate that thing), but after a baterry box and rubber stock plate this thing is reallt nice
December 21st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Ihave this gun already, iwant to upgrade the spring to m120? its possible to use it? or m110… its all stock
December 21st, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Carlo,
It should already be an m120 spring. That is why it shoots at the fast speed that it does.
December 24th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Does this MP5 have the 14mm ccw thread so i can use my tracer unit on the weapon if not can i use the unit from my T/M MP5? Thanks this is the only thing holding me back. If you could can i get a response via e-mail thanks -Bob

Can I use an m4 barrel on the JG mp5 RIS???
January 27th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
6human6animal6,
Will it fit? Yes. But it will stick out the front of the outer barrel leaving the delicate inner barrel exposed. You will need to get a silencer to hid the length of the barrel.

March 5th, 2009 at 1:47 am
Hi,
based on your review, I bought this AEG and I would like to thank you for your reviews, I have found it litter better than you have reviewed it
I am very happy with this AEG, I hate the front grip but I am thinking to put stick type li-poly bettary.. can you advise which mah and volt i should get?
March 5th, 2009 at 1:51 am
Aekpani,
I agree with your decision to use a LiPoly batt. with this weapon. I myself just purchased an 11.7volt 1500mah battery and it works great on my m4. Very small in size as well and it is not affected by cold near as much as other types.
I wanted extremely fast trigger reaction time, which is why I went with 11.7 volts. That is up to you.

If i was to downgrade to a Madbull M110 what would the FPS be taken down to? I’ve heard that because Madbull are very high quality at barely takes the FPS down at all.
April 24th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Haha i still find it funny that someone wanted to put a m160 in this gun… Seriously? lol owell… if i were you and wanted to shoot hot i would get a gun with a longer barrel like an m4 or g36 and anything really over 120 you will need torque up gears… i would actually degrade this spring to a m110 or m100 thats still going to shoot between 320-390 somewhere close to that and you wont strip your hears and piston as easy. mp5’s arent really made for long ranges theres no point in upgrading the spring.
April 24th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
O and idk about jg’s motors but they might not be so great and you have to understand all guns will go bad eventually especially if you dont take care of them. but the lipoly batteries are really good and i believe a good amount of money good upgrade but i wouldnt go with a 11.1v since the jg’s motors might not be as nice as systema or the better guns… Also a cheap upgrade around 50 dollars or so you can get a mosfet system for your gun.. Its better on the motor and if you get active breaking its better on the spring too… these systems increase your rate of fire and trigger response incredibly and keep the trigger contacts lasting a while too… definitely a great upgrade… a 9.6v battery and mosfet would be a better idea then a 11.1v li poly
May 2nd, 2009 at 11:32 pm
I couldn’t fire this gun semi with an 8.4, and a cheap 9.6 won’t fit right in the stock I used (got it new through a boneyard without the grip or the stock). I reluctantly pulled the lipo out and it shoots great. I’m mot sure what’s reinforced in this box.
If you’re going to use the LiPo, be careful with it. The motor seems pretty strong, however you can risk burnout and/or wearing out your piston prematurely.
if you want to use a lipo with confidence, get ball bearings, and a reinforced piston. You shouldn’t need a high torque motor on an m120 spring, but who knows.
I’ve used the lipo sparingly, and trust me, if you throw in a tight bore, you can dominate even a long range field. A 9.6 will suffice, but a lipo is more stable

June 13th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Hi… does the gearbox comes with metal bushing, metal spring guide, metal cylinder head? and how about the piston?
June 28th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
OK, where do i start…
i love this gun and i don’t even have it and i love it, i have spent so much time looking at it, researching it, and watching videos about it and here is the thing I’m 14, so I’m not flowing with cash and i have been working my butt off to get a good gun and if I’m going to spend a lot of money on a gun i want at least 390 FPS so that is way i have been so worried about this gun because it could be 360 FPS or 415 FPS and i work so hard to get the money i don’t want to get ripped off and be sad when i get.
bkeltner, tell me what to do…..
June 29th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Sam,
First off you might want to use a period or two in your posts.
What type of gameplay do you participate in? Indoor or outdoor? If outdoor then I always recommend using a weapon with a longer barrel. An mp5 barrel is extremely short. You will have much improved accuracy with a longer barrel. If you are playing indoor then this weapon is to hot. You would have to downgrade the spring to be legal in almost all indoor facilities. This is a great weapon with a great JG Black gearbox, but it just didn’t have the accuracy to stay in my outdoor arsenal.
June 29th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
OK.
got any suggestions, i need under $180 and at least 390 FPS, battery powered, full metal, and a fully/semi.
July 18th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Hey George im having the same exact problem which screw was it
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:30 am
Hi Bkeltner
VERY nice review. i’m strongly considering buying this gun now, although i need to know if you can fit a silencer on the gun before i can decide.. do you know if it’s possible, and in case it is, which kind of silencer? it would be very nice if you could notify me on mail
thx

is it 14mm thread?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Hey bkeltner, i was wondering if you could tell me where you found this gun with all accessories, because i tried your websites listed and i only found it at one site and it does not have all the accessories that you got, (scope, and suppressor). All the places i found they had the same picture but not whats in it.
i really want this gun but cant find what you got. please help and write back. thanks!
September 1st, 2009 at 8:29 am
Dylan, As far as I know this weapons comes with those accessories nowhere. That is something that a lot of websites do to make the gun more appealing. You could however buy all the individual parts. It appears to be a madbul ‘gemtech’ supressor and a mock aimpoint sight.
September 6th, 2009 at 11:19 am
is the battery hard to get in this gun
September 6th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
is this gun worth getting or is there a better jg gun
September 12th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
if I wanted to degrade the spring would I have to take it to a shop or could I do it my self
October 19th, 2009 at 8:05 am
will a regular aimpoint red dot sight fit on this gun
January 20th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
I am thinking about buying this gun. And probably will with all the good reviews. But i was wondering about how much the full metal one weighs and what type of scope i should get for this gun if i buy it. Thanks
February 26th, 2010 at 10:38 am
IMHO i think you should say what grams your bbs were when you did the accuracy test. changes things alot!
July 19th, 2010 at 1:15 pm
well i just started air-soft and i really like this gun i played the other day at my nearby field and i shot my friend and he has a huge welt also i used a suppressor and a 30.00$ scope its got some range with the suppressor overall i love this gun 5/5
August 2nd, 2010 at 8:05 am
hey bkeltner, i got this gun a couple of day ago. the reviews were good… but people say that “upgrade parts” for this gun are hard to find, is it true? one more question, the shop told me the stock 8.4volt Ni-MH battery would just last for more or less 3months? my battery is located at the butt-stock… most people would recommend the M4’s or the stubby killer for CQB. would you agree that JG Mp5 ras is better?
August 15th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
my mp5 is 5 months old and now im having problems with my selector “loosening up” which locks my trigger. does anyone here ever encountered the same problem?
